The proposed Jet Mustang fighter project was a tricycle landing gear variant of the P-51 standard, with forward-swept wing, P-51 H tail surfaces, 11.46 m (37.6 ft.) overall length and mixed power plant configuration . The nose-mounted piston engine was one 2,300 hp. Allison V-1710-G6R and the rear turbojet one Westinghouse 19 XB-28 (J30) rated at 613 kg (1,349 lb) static thrust. The two cooling systems, located between the engine and the cockpit, they were equipped with NACA submerged suction inlets and ventral nozzles with Meredith effect properties . The turbojet intakes were of the same type and were installed in the fuselage sides, behind the cockpit . The wings, with 10.81 m (35.5 ft.) wingspan, 24 degrees swept in the leading edge, 45 degrees in the trailing edge and 12 degrees dihedral angle, housing the main landing gear, ailerons, flaps, spoilers and six 0.50 cal machine guns.

To improve the Mustang performances North American was forced to consider the use of ramjets. The theory elaborated by René Lorin in 1913 established that this type of engines produced the maximum thrust at Mach 2 but the work carried out by Dr. Eugen Sänger in 1940 showed that a ramjet built with length/diameter ratio of 5 to 1 could work in the high subsonic speed range, with lower specific fuel consumption than a rocket and higher thrust than a turbojet .
